What I’ve Learned So Far This Week

I thought it would be cool to try something new and write a little bit about what I learned this week. This is what I have learned so far!

Enjoy.

I’ve taken it upon myself to start receiving some “certifications” through LinkedIn learning courses. These courses are very professional and in-depth, and so far I’ve found that they explain things in a different and more corporate way than college coursework did. I took two courses this week, one talking about running Healthcare projects, and one about Lean SIx Sigma and how this is used to maximize performance improvement.

If you’re a good writer and want to get paid for it… It turns out there is a tab on craigslist titled “writing/editing/translating” where you can see postings for freelance writing related jobs. There are also categories for a lot of other types of freelance work. I always knew craigslist as the potentially scammy website that I visited  to buy tickets or to look for a bike, not as a place to look for side jobs.

I came across two pretty interesting acronyms to help with symptoms of anxiety or depression- the ABCDE method and WORRY.

A Adversity (activating event)
B Beliefs about adversity
C Consequences of beliefs (emotional/behavioral)
D Disputing harmful beliefs (examine/challenge them)
E new Effects (recognize/dispute harmful thinking)

W Will myself to act against worry
O Organize to address worry, test your plan when caught off guard
R Reflect by separating fact vs fiction
R Respond actively to control what I can and accept what I can’t
Y Yield to reality that worries will occur and often shouldn’t be taken seriously

I was reading a .pdf that was discussing the 9-5 workday and how employees celebrate Wednesday as being halfway through the week, always looking forward to the weekend. If you think back, it was always that way growing up, attending school as well. But then a common thought in a lot of books is to live in the moment and enjoy the present, because you can’t change the past, you can only change how you examine it, whereas you can often directly influence your future. This makes me think that one reason the 9-5 workday is so unproductive for so many people because it causes one to get into a constant cycle of going through the motions, always looking forward to something in the future and never enjoying the present moment. This also led me to reflect on summers growing up, where I often just looked forward to the next game, event, concert, party, etc instead of enjoying the process and the days in-between. Food for thought!
